Help me give my students triangle pencils, black pens, playdough, cardstock, blank flashcards, and privacy boards to help them master beginning reading skills.
My Title I school is tucked into a neighborhood. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch as well as a fruit/veggie snack at the end of the school day. Our students are excited to come to school to learn and interact with their friends. As the reading specialist for my school, I interact with each and every student throughout the week. We love to share and discuss books with one another.
From kindergarten through fifth grade, my students are growing their love of reading on a daily basis.
Students often stop to share with me what they are currently reading. They will stop me in the hall to ask if I have another copy of a book they saw a friend reading. They will thank me for providing new and exciting books for their teachers to read aloud. Students in various grade levels will talk and laugh about books we have read as a school. My students' increasing love of books is growing a culture of literacy in our building.
My Project
My students need materials to help them master early literacy skills. I work with students in grades K - 3 to help them begin learning to identify letters and letter sounds. We then move into spelling and reading simple words. Many of my young students struggle with gripping a pencil correctly. My older students write their work in pen so that they do not spend time erasing when they make mistakes. I use plenty of cardstock throughout the year to create games and activities to engage parents at home and keep the learning going over school breaks.
The simplest of supplies can have the biggest impact on my students' learning.
A triangle pencil that corrects pencil grip makes writing easier for my students and keeps the frustration away. Writing in pen in a spelling notebook allows my students to see the progress they have made and how they continue to learn from their mistakes. Seeing progress creates confidence and pride in my students. Games and activities printed on cardstock allow parents to stay involved in their child's learning. While these may be basic supplies, they mean a great deal to my students.
