This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than twelve years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Eight years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.

I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.

More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to grade 12. 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home and most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.

My Project

In kindergarten, we are learning virtually how to read and write our ABCs and much more. Some of the challenges is the lack of materials students have access during our distance learning. Handwriting practice is one of those skills that with practice and the right tools, students will get better. Right now, most of the work is done through an Apps in iPads.

Students can greatly benefit from having basic blackboards and chalk to practice handwriting daily.

We use a writing curriculum called Handwriting Without Tears that is researched based and highly engaging for young students. Students and families can enhance and accelerate students handwriting right at home.

Students can use these materials in their Spanish and English literacy classes daily. Chalkboards will add so much more hands on learning for our student as well as support student's fine motor skills.
