My Students

Students in my classroom come from fifteen different Native American tribes in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. They live nine months of every year at school, with little to no contact with their families. They come from a variety of home lives but come to school with the hope of a brighter future. Many of my students have become accustomed to not having the newest resources or technology, but they still persevere.

Within a few months of being in my classroom, they learn that they can achieve things that many thought they never would.

They are reading harder books (sometimes even their first chapter book), doing harder math problems, and are able to do their own research on things that interest them.

My Project

This project is different from any I have done before as I am hoping to help students not only in my immediate classroom but students school wide. I am requesting backpacks for students to use to carry supplies between the dorms and school and from class to class. Many students arrive on campus without basic clothing necessities, let alone backpacks and school supplies. By having backpacks we will be able to teach students how to keep organized and keep track of school supplies, homework, etc. throughout the school day.

The backpacks we are requesting will be available for any students who need one to use at school in grades 1st-8th grade.

By having a backpack available to use students should be better prepared for class, which in turn will make learning easier!
