Back In The Building With Diversity And Inclusion In Mind!

Help me give my students access to a classroom library full of books reflecting diversity, acceptance, and inclusion.

My Students

My little scholars are sweet as pie with a glimmer of curiosity in their eye. They remind me of a diverse bunch of goodies in a candy store. Each one contributes uniqueness with hope and a mix of creativity. They love learning and discovering the world around them. They are funny and often unpredictable but always inquisitive and wanting to know more.

My students are all residents of DC and receive free lunch.

Although many experience challenges outside of the classroom, they typically attend school eager to engage with teachers and staff. Because of the current pandemic, they are experiencing uncertainty and concern. My students thrive when there is consistency, clear expectations, and when their needs are met.

My Project

This project consists of 29 books. These books will help me expose my scholars to a print-rich classroom that encourages inclusion, acceptance, and diversity. My classroom library is a place where my students are able to really enjoy getting lost in a story. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I have engaged with them online for virtual instruction. We have shared many stories across a computer screen. Now that we are going to be back in the classroom, I want to nurture their love for reading by providing them with stories they can learn from and connect with on their level.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level and partake in shared reading experiences.

My Students will be able to choose books that help them understand the world and the people whom with they share this world.

These books will help to support their socioemotional development. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading while influencing their empathy. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in discussing many topics regarding human relations and listening to read alouds about differences. This project will only help enrich their learning about diversity with printed word.
