My Students

Our middle school is a Title I-funded middle school that serves over 400 students, more than half of whom receive free or reduced-price lunch and are bused-in from far reaching neighborhoods. Over 50% of the school population is comprised of minority students who come from low-income backgrounds.

Experience has shown that when students feel more comfortable in their learning environment, they are able to focus better on instruction.

Our 7th and 8th grade students this year will need even more educational, social, and emotional learning as they re-enter school after a significant disruption to their education in 2020.

My Project

Board games are fantastic ways to encourage our students to foster new relationships and friendships while refining educational skills they didn't realize they already have. Spatial reasoning, mathematical probabilities, anticipating your opponent are all high-level cognitive functions that can transfer to our classrooms.

Board games build confidence and provide opportunities to take healthy risks with new ways of thinking and learning.

Our school is initiating a new program to strengthen relationships in a fun new way. Creating a non-stressful environment (dedicated solely to high-interest strategy games) will give my students the social and emotional reprieve they need to bounce back from pandemic learning. "Settlers of Catan" and "Carcassonne" are both games that will improve familiarity with mathematics and economics. In addition, their academic language will improve as new strategies are learned and developed.
