Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day, my students face challenges, before they enter the school building, ranging from extreme poverty, single-parent households, where the parent works multiple jobs, students with incarcerated parents, and many students who live in shelters.
Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day, and I do my best to provide an emotionally supportive environment to foster academic success.
We have a large population of Latino students in our school. Many of these students’ primary language is Spanish and they feel most comfortable speaking in their native language. I have an extremely limited vocabulary in Spanish. Having a program that would teach me Spanish would help me support these students.
My Project
I am a Middle School Social Worker working in the heart of the South Bronx. I am seeking funding for a Rosetta Stone Spanish language course.
My school has a high percentage of Latino students whose native language is Spanish and I only have a 10-word vocabulary!
Many more parents are Spanish speaking only.
As a Social Worker, I am counseling students who are often dealing with strong emotions. Because I have only the very basic Spanish words in my vocabulary, I have to rely on a translator. This can make my students feel uncomfortable sharing their struggles.
I am committed to learning Spanish through the Rosetta Stone program so that I can best serve my Latino students and families.
