My students need a library of great books like The Drinking Gourd, The Littles, Tikki Tikki Tembo, Bugs for Lunch, and more. They will enjoy these books and receive individualized reading instruction using these books.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
By the end of this school year, I hope students will make one year's worth of growth in reading! Or more! The biggest challenge is that our school does not have a guided reading library that a K-5 school needs in order to take on this challenge. Students are thirsty for these books and are ready to grow!
Our students range in age from 4 to 12.
Most students come from a local, largely Spanish-speaking, neighborhood in Boston. We have two inclusion classrooms and three learning disabled classrooms. The remaining three quarters of our classrooms are hybrids that support our English Language Learner population.
My Project
My students need a library of great books like The Drinking Gourd, The Littles, Tikki Tikki Tembo, Bugs for Lunch, and more. They will enjoy these books and receive individualized reading instruction using these books. Students will be using these books everyday to engage in individualized guided reading instruction with a teacher as well as for independent reading practice within a reading block. Students will be instructed around phonics, fluency, and comprehension skills - just to name a few.
Students get really excited when teachers introduce a new book to read!
Having these books in our classroom will foster a love for reading as well as their educational growth. Not only do I hope to see more students curled up with a good book, but a rise in student abilities that will show in their test scores and their overall confidence with learning.
