My Students
You probably have fond school memories! One of my favorites was learning to read. I recall reading a newspaper and seeing two words that I read as, "car pet." I didn't understand why a car would have a pet, as this was advertising RUGS. I soon could read "carpet" and more. My goal simply is READ!
My awesome Kindergartners, age 5 and 6, are excited about embarking on a journey of learning to read about their world.
My Magnet School of the Arts is a Title I, high-poverty, public school with approximately 95% on free-reduced lunch. Many come from homes without books, but many parents have I-phones, I-pods, I-pads or other technology which makes learning fun. However, when they get to school we have limited technology. Next year, as we embrace Common Core State Standards, we begin a new reading curriculum with a focus on technology. Unfortunately, we lack technology to provide our students opportunities to be successful. On last year's state-mandated annual assessment, our students scored at the 37% in reading, 40% in math, and 23% in science. We are setting high goals and employ diverse instructional strategies to improve student achievement to engage thinkers and learners, and develop an essential strong vocabulary. Technology could bridge the gap to effectively help!
My Project
Technology opens the world of reading for our awesome young thinkers! Minds come alive exploring letters, sounds, and words. Utilizing technology engages critical thinking, which many lack. I requested two, 7" Tablets for centers, reading groups and whole class to promote literacy learning. Each Tablet will have portability, moving around the class with a protective carrying case for peer collaboration. Targeted interactive technology with "apps" like Singing Fingers, Talk4me, I Write, Sentence Reading Magic, Memory Pro, Spelling Magic and many more are focused on the basic readiness skills of ABC, Sounds, and vocabulary. This provides concept introductions, reinforcement, and individualized instruction to meet the diverse needs of our early childhood learners. Effective teacher instruction, targeted curriculum, and word learning are essential to build a strong foundation for reading. "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest...Ben Franklin." Thank you for investing in children.
Overall, technology provides various supports to reach student's reading goals and improve learning.
Research shows barriers that non-readers exhibit have significant issues with traditional texts and books. Effectively utilizing technology and making connections with off-screen learning promotes success! Through this grant, "Awesome Technology Teaches Thinkers," I want to eliminate all cognitive barriers and support my students as they grow to become life-long readers and world-class thinkers!
