Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a learning home to anywhere between 16-24 1st grade students. We are an ESL and Special Education Inclusion classroom serving the needs of a wide range of strengths and areas of need including Gifted and Talented, attention difficulties, Autism, and difficult home lives. Despite the spectrum of strengths in our classroom, our students learn ways to take ownership of their classroom. They become a community of learners!!
I foster and emphasize a classroom where student strengths are highlighted, learning strategies are celebrated, and collaboration is integral to the learning of all students.
Students work together to push themselves and each other to discover and grow together.
As more refugees came to Austin, our classroom has become even more diverse. Due to our community of learning, my students embraced learning basic interpersonal vocabulary in Arabic, Swahili, and even learned to sign to support a deaf student! I couldn't be more proud of them!
My Project
Book boxes will help our readers create collections of books they are currently reading and working on, making reading time special each day! Slip covers, labels and plastic tubs will go a LONG way in helping us organize our Readers' and Writer's supplies so we can create our own books and write about our reading!
Great learning starts with organization!
Our learners are constantly learning to be more independent. Organized environments help make this possible!
The white board stickers and dry erase markers will give us the opportunity to create an interactive word wall so we can use our budding vocabulary and knowledge of words to add detail and enrichment to our writing!
