Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
?!.My students need help in proofreading.!? I teach second grade in a low-income school district on the east side of San Jose. Many of my students this year need help in is their proofreading skills. Therefore I am requesting daily editing books so we can begin a unit on proofreading.
Each day the students will learn about a new proofreading skill or strategy. The mini-lessons will be about five minutes. One day may focus on end punctuation, while another will focus on learning how to slow down when re-reading. A third day may center around quotation marks. The proofreading books break up the skills on a daily basis and spiral to revisit concepts and skills.
I am also requesting individual sand timers so the students will be able to take ownership of their own work and pace themselves. At the end of the proofreading unit, we will create our own proofreading book with problems and solutions that mirror the problems presented in the books I am requesting. Every day these problems will be on an overhead transparency. One student will go to the overhead and complete the problem while the other students check their work. To make this more organized, I am requesting overhead storage pockets and organizer bins. These pockets and bins will help the students keep the materials in order. This will ensure that the students take full advantage of the our %u201Cwarm up time%u201D.
