Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A day in our 5th grade classroom consists of students working together to understand challenging texts, sharing ideas & strategies with one another, and infectious curiosity. My 20 hard working English Language learners thrive with visual supports in independent and cooperative learning activities.
We are an inner city, public elementary school in Boston with a population of just under 900 students from many different cultural backgrounds and primarily low socioeconomic levels.
Our mission is to provide a challenging academic program that gives our students the tools to meet high standards in order to succeed and excel. We foster sound habits for healthy minds and bodies, and instill virtues such as integrity, respect, and self-discipline. We provide effective teaching methods and a nurturing environment promotes independent learning. Most of the students I serve do not have enriched lives outside of the classroom, and are often the only English speakers in their families. Most don’t even have access to technology at home. Yet, they come to school eager to learn, and are held to very high standards each day, knowing that I'm here to guide and support them every step of the way. I want them to have the resources they need to become successful students and lifelong learners.
My Project
My students need a document camera and LCD projector to become more active participants in their learning while live documents and objects are displayed in real-time. These learning tools will be amazing additions to our classroom learning community! They will be used all day, every day! A document camera will be a time saver and increase the amount of instructional time within the classroom. Instead of making copies, scanning documents, searching for pictures, etc., the immediate display of the material and student work allows for immediate feedback and instruction. Students frequently read their written responses, which are sometimes fairly long. The projector will allow everyone to easily see the response as well as listen to it, resulting in students being able to stay focused on the work at hand. The document camera and projector will allow for immediate feedback, and maximize visual learning. Most importantly, my students will become more excited about their learning.
A document camera and LCD projector will allow me to harness the attention, energy, and curiosity of all of my students, especially my English language learners.
As a result, their class participation will increase because they will feel more confident engaging with and exploring the material. Students will become excited and more active in their learning because it will feel easier for them to learn, and the material will seem more relevant.
