Awesome authors are what my students aspire to be! I am a second grade teacher at Brewer Island Elementary School in Foster City, California. This year our school launched a new writing program. Writer's Workshop nurtures children as writers, giving them time and space to learn how to write for a variety of audiences and purposes. Writer's Workshop is conducted daily in our classrooms. The one-hour time period begins as we gather for a mini-lesson. This is followed by independent work time, which allows students to write on their own or in a variety of collaborative groupings, while the teacher confers with individual students. During the last few minutes of the workshop, everyone comes back together to share the day's work and learning. The writing units include: Personal Narrative, Poetry, Response to Literature, and Literary Non-fiction. Immersion is the first step of each new unit. Students read and investigate many published examples of the different genres. Filling the classroom with the sound of wonderful children's literature is a priority in this program. Read-alouds help build community by providing shared experiences of enjoying beautiful language and important stories. Having access to the suggested literature for each unit in the classroom will assist in improving my students' writing skills. Students will use these titles as mentor texts or models as they draft, edit, revise, and ultimately “publish” their own stories. For certain lessons, students each need a book and in other cases multiple copies of the same titles are required. I have purchased some of these suggested books myself and, luckily, we have some in our school library. However, there are many more books that are necessary for our Writer's Workshop program. Please help me add more of these mentor texts to our classroom library. On behalf of my student authors and myself, I thank you greatly for considering our proposal.
