My Students

My students are awesome! They love to create art! We have been creating many art projects in many media.

My students are an energetic and enthusiastic group of elementary students from a city in Massachusetts called Lowell.

Lowell is an inner-city​ school district and faces many challenges such as funding art education. At home, most of the students have no exposure to art-making materials and techniques.

We love creating art! Unfortunately, we work within a very limited budget. The budget provides less than one dollar per student per year. I am running out of paper and black oil pastels!

My Project

Art is awesome! Many students' favorite special is Art instead of Gym. I see about five hunderd students every week. Most projects take two or three art classes to complete, but use two sheets of paper. We often draw and paint something on a white paper, make a background on a colored paper, and then cut and glue the painting to the background.

Black oil pastels make bold lines and our bright paintings stand out on dark paper!

We use the black oil pastels so often, they are worn down to tiny nubs by this point in the year. We are down to the last pack of black paper. The students make beautiful artwork; I always have hallway walls covered with work. Many art teachers use tons of paper by mounting or even double mounting artwork for display, but my budget is so small, I don't even have enough paper to make the artwork!
