My Students

Don't give them paper and pencil, give them pastel chalks, class pets, plants to grow, rocks to touch, songs to sing, and tools to hold. These are the active, creative, and curious students that fill my classroom this year. My students are "hands-on" learners, meaning they like to get messy, create and discover. Math is a particularly exciting subject to them so they create life situations and determine ways to use it in the world around them.

Tools in this classroom are not books and paper, but protractors and colored pencils.

These kids literally take learning into their own hands as they discover and create with the tools and supplies around them. Ask these kids to do math and watch them build and draw. Our community is rich with artists and families. Parents work hard to support their children and their children's teachers. This is such an important element in the success of these kids.

My Project

Getting technology into our classrooms has been the focus of school wide fund raisers. It has been great to get these things into our classrooms. However, simple tools and supplies have been neglected and worn out. In the 4th grade we learn how to measure and create angles and how to find them in our community. This has become a real challenge the past few years because we do not have enough working protractors for each student. It would be a great relief to have a protractor for each student to use. This would save so much time, and give individuals the opportunity to create and solve. Teaching the art of angles becomes interrupted when other classes need to use the few protractors we have. With protractors for each 4th grade student to use, we could be more efficient and effective in teaching and learning.
