This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.

I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students are on free or reduced lunch.

Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.

My Project

Fractions, and fraction concepts, are some of the hardest skills for my fifth graders to master. Sometimes it's very hard for my students to visualize how fractions relate to each other. The magnetic fraction strips will allow me to set up a center in my classroom to help those students who need a more concrete example in order for them to master this skill.

Who doesn't like to show off their acting chops in front of the whole class?

Sets of Readers' Theater will allow my students to not only do this, but to also practice their fluency and expression at the same time. This will be great for students who struggle to read (giving them a fun way to practice), and for those high fliers who are looking for a way take their creativity to a whole new level. This will also provide an excellent model of good fluency for those students that struggle with their reading.

Regardless of who is using these materials, they are going to have fun with them and that will make them want to come to school and learn. Getting the children to be excited to come to school is the first step to a great education and these materials will give them that incentive to wake up and join us each day.
