My Students

Our Title I school is located in a very diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn. My students are 5 years old. They are an enthusiastic and hard-working bunch. Many of my kindergarteners are growing up in low-income homes and do not have access to the learning materials at home needed to promote their academic growth. Regardless of the challenges they face, my students are highly motivated and love coming to school.

The spectrum of developmental levels in kindergarten is vast, and I am working hard to meet the needs of all my students.

My Project

Kindergarten is a magical year. In just 10 months my students grow from shy preschoolers into confident almost first-graders. My students need books and materials that will allow them to learn the alphabet and develop early literacy skills through multi-sensory activities. For example, magnetic write & wipe board will invite kids to draw, spell and explore the alphabet; letter stamps are great for stamping out the letters of their names right onto the play-dough. Then too, my students will piece together a giant puzzle—sequencing the alphabet and learning letter sounds as they go. These alphabet activities are engaging and allow youngsters to explore letters and sounds through play. My students also need multiple copies of emergent story books such as Peter's Chair and Caps for Sale. I usually read the same book to my students for several days. This helps them build story language and understand the story structure. Then I give my students copies of the book so they can practice "reading" on their own. First they look at the pictures and tell the story from memory, then they learn to find familiar words. This kind of reading develops oral language and provides solid foundation for conventional reading.

This project will greatly support my students as they learn the alphabet and acquire early literacy skills.
