My students need 32 books about their favorite environmental subject--ANIMALS! They are learning so much from these amazing books, and I want to keep them reading.
I love, love, love teaching my first graders how to read. It is a great responsibility, yet a challenge that I look forward to each year. I am asking for 32 environmental science books about animals. Most of them are about baby animals.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
said it best, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and think critically. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education." I am a first grade teacher in a rural area in Idaho. My students' economic situations are just as varied as are their family dynamics. We celebrate the diversity in our school and we love being know as the "Stars." Seventy percent of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Regardless of these factors, every single one of my students has a great desire to create, learn, explore, play, and to think critically.
My Project
Science books provide a sense of discovery, adventure, and knowledge in an ever changing world and universe. The two most important things I consider when choosing books are a student's reading level and their interests. My students love science, so I have selected a variety of fiction and non-fiction books that focus on the topics we discuss. I also need books at their reading level, so the 32 books I have selected range between a 1.0 and 3.0 reading levels. I told my students about this book list, and they are keeping their fingers crossed that we can get these books for our classroom. Sometimes when spring fever kicks in, it is nice to have something new and exciting to pull out to keep them behaving. This is the third part of environmental books that we have asked for this year, and the children cannot get enough of them. They read them almost as fast as I can get them ready to put on the shelf. Isn't that a great problem to have?
Reading lays the foundation upon which all other learning is based.
Therefore, by incorporating these environmental science books into our class, I am ensuring that my students become early readers, capable readers, and children that enjoy books, reading, and learning. Thank you for believing in us!
