This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Debate is one of the most incredible academic opportunities! The problem is that it is also one of the most expensive! A typical tournament could cost each team of two students about $100 in registration fees! So most schools do not have debate teams. We want to change this with DonorsChoose.org!
Our school is typical of most public school debate teams.
We are located next to the Bronx jail where there is a daily line of inmates coming in and out. On the other side of the street is the criminal court where there is a daily line of criminal cases. The South Bronx is known more for poverty, crime, drugs, gangs, and failing schools than academic opportunities. However, our school six years ago started a debate team -- the only school in the South Bronx with a debate team. It has grown to nearly 100 students from grades 7th-12th. Their academic abilities range from special education to valedictorian. Their background ranges from abuse, mental institutionalization to perfect attendance. Their behavior ranges from regularly suspended to model student. But they are all united by their passion and love for debating. They spend their days learning about debate, evenings in debate practice, weekends at debate tournaments and summers at debate camps. And this is just one such team!
My Project
Students love competition and awards! We hope to partner with DonorsChoose.org and investors like you to provide our students with the best scholastic academic opportunities possible and encourage and award participating students with recognition - medals, trophies, and certificates. Every student should be a Great Debater and every student should be treated like a Great Debater! As a teacher and a parent, there is nothing better than seeing a student win their first academic award! They will be lifelong learners! Unfortunately, these scholastic tournament opportunities have been declining in recent years. Most debate tournaments cost money, some up to $100 per debater! This is an educational travesty. But in the past year thanks to DonorsChoose.org and its incredible supporters, we have started to reverse this trend by offering free debate tournaments to any student and awards for all debaters! Thanks to your help every student can be a Great Debater!
Debate is an incredible activity for students!
It teaches students valuable skills in public speaking, research, logic, argumentation, debate, reading, writing, note taking, and analysis. It teaches knowledge that is not covered in traditional schools and the "common core" - philosophy, political science, current events, economics, all the social sciences, critical theory, and a number of other subjects that the average student wont even hear until college! So please support our Great Debaters!
