This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The books featured in this project are destined for approximately 400 children in 5th grade through 8th grade. They attend a K-8 center in South Florida, where I am the school librarian. About 84% of our kids come from households with below average income. The majority are learning English as a second language. Like kids everywhere, our students love graphic novels.

The newest middle school craze is Victoria Jamieson.

Recently, we acquired a few copies of Victoria Jamieson's graphic novel 'Roller Girl' (a Newbery Award winner). The good news is that our middle schoolers are checking 'Roller Girl' out. The bad news is that they are asking for more titles by Victoria Jamieson....and, right now, we don't have any. Jamieson books are particularly in demand by the 5th and 6th grade girls who form the backbone of the Middle School Book Club.

My Project

I would love to take advantage of the kids' enthusiasm for Victoria Jamieson by acquiring more of her graphic novels for our library. My 8th grade student aides have chosen four more Jamieson titles. Won't you please help us get four copies of each story? That would put sixteen new Jamieson books in the hands of our students.

Victoria Jamieson books are all the rage. We need to stock our library with popular titles like these that will keep our kids coming back to the library day after day. I also want to provide the Middle School Book Club with Jamieson books. I'm hoping that the club members' enthusiasm for graphic novels will impress the club coordinator, so that she will accept graphic novels as monthly book selections.
