My students are bright-eyed and full of energy each day they walk through the doors of my classroom. Success for my students means making improvement, and they are improving each and every day.
Approximately 65% of the students in my school receive free or reduced price lunch.
Despite having to face the burdens of poverty, my students enjoy having high quality materials while at school, and my goal is to provide them with the best experience possible. We just need a little help to make that possible!
My Project
This year, I am going to be requiring my Pre-AP language arts students to read all 20 books from the Young Hoosier Award nominees list. Pre-AP is a class for advanced students that is taken in preparation of AP English classes once they reach high school. AP English classes can earn students college credit, so I have these students read as much as possible to help prepare them.
The Young Hoosier Book Award is awarded by the Indiana Library Federation to one book from each year's list of nominees, based on the votes of students who have read five or more of the books from the Middle Grades list.
Books are nominated by teachers, librarians, and others and then selected for the list of twenty final nominees by a committee formed by members of the Association of Indiana School Library Educators.
Reading these books will provide my students with exposure to works that are currently being recognized for their outstanding merits. While our school library tries to order copies of the books, they are checked out very quickly since all language arts teachers require students to read the Young Hoosier nominees. With your help, I can put two copies of each of the books on the shelves of our classroom library.
