Mrs. B. from Memphis TN is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 20 copies of Weekly Reader and Time for Kids to visually stimulate their senses and spur conversation within the classroom.

I teach self-contained Special Education to students in the 9-11th grades. My students stay with me the entire school day to learn math, science, social studies, English, and life skills. My students function between a pre-k and 7th grade level, and are either mentally retarded, autistic, emotionally disturbed, developmentally delayed, or have a myriad of other learning disabilities. The school my students attend is classified as a high need Title 1 school with 97% of the student population on free or reduced lunch. The school is located in a blighted and defunct urban area where supplies and hope are hard to come by.
My students cannot afford lunch, let alone school supplies. Special Education is last in line for supplies from the extremely struggling school. Last year I purchased my students text books, a classroom library, and all of their school supplies. It's imperative that my students have something tangible to both look at and touch when we are learning about the world around us and how we can best take care of ourselves.
My students will be thrilled to read about the current events happening in the world much larger than their own. Having a manipulative and wonderful photos and illustrations of topics we will be discussing will be invaluable to my students. Plus, they can take these periodicals home and share them with their family members who will also benefit from this information.
I joined Teach for America because I believed that there was an enormous injustice occurring in this nation on my watch. After teaching for a year I would have never ever believed the reality my students and everyone in my school building face day to day. They are truly forgotten. Your investment in my classroom will help me continue to foster impressive results from my students. They love to read and see things they've never been exposed to before. The look on their faces when they see the world beyond their neighborhoods is the most most priceless and inspiring thing I've ever witnessed. Thank you so very much for your time.
