My Students
Our school is located near 2 military bases and significant number of my students are the children of deployed military personnel. My students are racially and ethnically diverse. We are 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school but it is now a school in transition. According to the last US Census, the average income was way below the average for the rest of the city. 18.4 % of the families received Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. All my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our school is over 30 years old and we need new books but we have no money to buy them.
There is an old English proverb which says that a good book is the best of friends and I want my students to meet some of their best friends forever while learning about libraries.
My Project
It is very simple. My kindergarten students need books that will introduce them to school, the world of libraries and the joy of reading. I teach library skills to primary students. My school library book picture collection is worn-out from decades of use. The books are old, read-out and not very appealing. Generations of children have read these books but now we need new copies and new titles. I cannot teach students how to care for books when the pages are torn or dirty. I plan to read the picture books like The Not So Quiet Library, Splat the Cat and the Late Library Book, and Manners in the Lunchroom during library story time and then discuss the books and concepts with my students. These new picture books will become the basis for a new unit on library skills.
Many of my kindergartners have never been to a library and they have never had the joy of hearing a story or holding a new picture book in their hands.
Your support can dramatically change the lives of my students. Your support of this project will help them learn about school manners, libraries and books and put them on the road to success.
