Bragg Street Academy is a small, public alternative school. When it was opened in 1995, it was, to a large extent, viewed as a "warehouse for the bad kids." Since then, we've come a long way. Now, we are a school for students who are unsuccessful in the traditional classroom. The keys words there are "school" and "students." We are, absolutely, a real school with real students in grades 7-11. When Bragg Street was envisioned, the only site available was a former elementary school. As such, our building does not have any lockers for the students. When the school opened, this lack was not a problem, since the majority of the students did not bother to carry any books, nor even bring pencils to school anyway. Now, however, our students typically carry the books for all their classes, as well as notebooks, paper, pencils, gym clothes, coats, and any other supplies, in their backpacks. Some of these backpacks can weigh upward of 50 pounds. Our students desperately need a safe place in which to store their possessions during the school day. We would like to request lockers for our students. Our typical student body consists of 40-50 students. Having lockers would not only help the students avoid back strain, it would also help them feel like the "real" students that they are.
