My students need nonfiction books to update our extremely outdated nonfiction section.

My Students
Our nonfiction selection is over 90% dated and yet, 50% of our check-outs are nonfiction. It's my goal to help our students have access to updated nonfiction texts.
My students are located in Texas; they rarely are middle school boys and girls who rarely see snow and who brave the hot, Texas sun and humidity most of the year.
They are middle-class and lower-class students, who may not have the money to personally purchase books, so they rely on the library for reading materials. Our school turns 30 years old this year, so we are not a young school.
My Project
To better serve our students, I ran a Follett Titlewave analysis to see where the gaps in our nonfiction sections were, Dewey-wise. I then did a book-by-book inventory to weed outdated materials and made a list of subjects that our library did not represent or did not represent in an updated manner. I also took into account the types of books my students request most frequently.
As an English and now a librarian, I know that often times the best way to engage struggling and disinterested readers is through nonfiction texts.
By allowing our nonfiction selections to better represent today's world, we can only be doing our students a service.
