AVID: Organizing and Collaborating For College Readiness
Help me give my students the essential items for organizing their AVID College and Career Readiness Binder as well the tools they will use for effective collaboration.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are interested in college or continuing their education beyond high school. Many of them will be first-generation college students and they receive free or reduced lunch. One of the obstacles that my students will need to overcome is developing a set of skills that will help them be prepared for college.
I work with students who struggle to stay organized and need to develop their collaboration skills.
They also need support with writing, reading, and inquiry. A focus in these areas will help them to be college and career ready!
My Project
My students will be building their foundation for college and career readiness by being enrolled in my AVID elective class. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID, a national program, uses research-based methods to prepare students for enrollment in honors, Advanced Placement (AP) and college classes. The basis for this innovative class is showing students how to organize, write detailed notes, ask deep questions and collaborate.
Students will gain a level of confidence when they have learned how to maintain an organized binder, set goals, plan, write notes and participate in class discussions.
It is this confidence that will help them to advocate for themselves and be leaders in our school. This shift with a core group of students has the capacity to impact the entire school population.
