Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach in an inner city Chicago public school. The school is located in a recently gentrified neighborhood. Low income housing is continually being demolished to make space for people seeking to build condos on inexpensive land. Most of my students live on the very outskirts of the neighborhood in what little remains of the low income housing (hopefully the wrecking ball spares them) and make 30-45 minute trek to school each morning. The school is designed for 1,300 students but in the last few years our enrollment has not exceeded 800 students. Many of the incoming residents to the area surrounding the school send their children to private schools. Unfortunately, a beautiful and historic school is barely 'hanging on by a thread'.

Because of our extremely low student enrollment, we lack much of the basic funding that our larger neighboring schools receive. Last year, all of the tutoring programs were eliminated. Elective classes have dwindled over the years as well. We have only one art teacher for 800 students. As the neighborhood continues to gentrify, the school and it's students continue to suffer from dramatic budget cuts.

My school is trying to become an AVID school. AVID is a program that is designed to help kids gain the skills needed to succeed in high school and continue on to a four year college. I was honored to be asked to teach two of the three total AVID elective courses offered to students this year. It is a voluntary class in which students must be recommended by past teachers and counselors to participate. Each student is interviewed prior to being placed in the AVID elective class. AVID seeks out freshman (9th grade) students with average grades but high levels of determination. Many of the students in AVID are extremely motivated but lack the parental guidance and basic skills to reach their potential. They all qualify for free lunch and (hopefully) will be first generation college graduates! A major component to the AVID elective class is building organizational skills. They are required to keep all of their schoolwork in a single three inch binder. We will spend considerable time learning how to take Cornell notes, keeping an agenda, maintaining learning logs - which will all be organized in their binders.

Here is the obstacle. Three inch binders are $13 each. For a truly successful class, every student needs a binder and most of my students simply cannot afford them. With your help, the AVID elective class has serious potential to make a difference in the way students view their education and their future. Any help will be sincerely appreciated!
