My students need a sensory corner with fidgets, kinetic sand, water beads, rocking chairs, a shelf that will help create the sensory corner and noise canceling headphones that can help them process sensory information.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is an energetic, excited, and overwhelmingly enthusiastic group of Kindergarteners. They love coming to school and interacting with their peers and teachers. They are a funny, dedicated, and inquisitive group of students who run into the classroom and don't want to leave! They are four and five-year-old students who need lessons and activities to keep them engaged in learning. Our school is a new school with Pre-kindergarten through second-grade students. Our school has a high population of English Language Learners, Special Education students, and students from various cultural backgrounds. Our students need a high level of support for them to learn at their best.
My Project
My class is a class called ASD Nest. ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder and Nest because the classroom is nested within a NYC public school. My students have a hard time processing sensory input. Lights, noises and music can bother them to the point when they have a physical breakdown. What this looks like for them is throwing chairs, hitting themselves or someone else, ripping paper off the walls, and/or banging their hands, head or body into the wall. This is why I want to provide them with a sensory area in the room where they can choose to go to use sensory supplies that can help them process sensory input (fidgets, rocking chairs, water beads, kinetic sand, noise canceling headphones) so they are not seeking it.
I would like to create a classroom environment that works for my young students.
That is why I want to create a sensory area in my classroom. They can go there when they need a break and they can use a fidget such as the water beads, kinetic sand, light up aquarium, or rocking chairs to help provide them with sensory input so they can return to their work after their break. I would like to create a sensory space in my classroom where the students can visit when they need a sensory break and then return to work when they are done. The students can choose to sit in the rocking chairs while working so they are getting sensory input while working. The reason why they seek this sort of sensory input is because people on the autism spectrum have difficulty managing their sensory
