Autistic Outlets

Help me give my students a positive outlet for their times of crisis and when they are feeling the need to elope.

My Project

This school year I have been working with eight seventh and eighth grade boys with autism. It is NEVER a dull moment. Our class focuses on an Individual Student Learning Environment or ISLE. Each student's needs are taken into consideration, and then we work with them to be as successful as possible either in a self-contained program, general education and ISLE mixed, or in all general education classes. They are some of the most complex and fun kids I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

One of my amazing boys has huge BURSTS of energy.

One minute he will be quiet, and sitting still. Within a split second he will be up, jumping up and down, and making lots of noise. Often times I will have him run down the band hall, touch the door, and come back. He will do this two or three times. We also have a large yoga ball. He knows how to bounce on it and roll it forward at the same time. Often you will find him bouncing down the hall. It looks easy, but it is NOT! All of these activities are helping him become more successful at sitting still for extended periods of time by constructively expelling his anxiety.

Having a treadmill in the classroom would allow him and the other boys to get out some of their extra energy/anxiety without disturbing any classes. The boys love the yoga balls. Some like to use them as chairs. Others use them to self-soothe, and a few of them use the yoga balls to get out energy. We will use the ink to create more visuals for our students; schedules, rewards systems, and incentive charts.
