This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Every day new technology is changing our lives in ways we never imagined. For individuals with autism, some new technologies can improve communication, assist in the development of social skills, and enhance the ability to learn." - AutismSpeaks.org
My students are a WONDERFUL bunch of 4th and 5th graders who are faced with living their day to day lives with autism in a self- contained setting in a public elementary school.
My students cognitive ability ranges from low to high. Some are able to speak and comprehend while others are still at a prekindergarten level. The one thing that they all have in common is that they are all visual learners.
My Project
If given the opportunity to have a projector in our classroom, the resources and outcomes would be endless. My students would have full access to the Internet which in turn would allow them to advance both socially and fully grasp their educational needs.
Our curriculum at this moment is totally online. Every resource is printed or I myself use my artistic abilities to try to bring my point across. The use of a projector would allow my students to better grasp the concept for example of why does ice freeze or reading a book together as a whole. It would also give them the opportunity to work on their social skills, such as turn taking and working cooperatively with one another.
Any donations to this project would allow my students to be at the top of their game.
Unfortunately in my school and many other schools, our autistic classrooms have been at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to the technology aspect. Yet it has proved to show that these students benefit tremendously from visual support. With extra assisted support, my students would have the same opportunity as with any other child in a public education system.
