My students need adaptive books to help them communicate their thinking while reading. These books will allow my students the opportunity to answer who, what, where questions.
In my classroom, you will find 10 students with autism who are full of joy and excitement for learning. They are developing social skills, but struggle using their words to communicate about curriculum content. All of my students have a unique way of experiencing the world that allows others to learn from them. Our classroom has a rich environment focused on content and learning activities that my students enjoy. My students work hard to be accepted and included in our school. They are encouraged to learn and be successful in every area of school when they participate in our class.
My Project
Students with autism in my classroom are able to read, but have difficulting communicating their thinking. This project will provide literature and tools to create adaptive books for my students. These books allow the students to answer questions and velcro their answers into the book. They will be able to show their learning and how they comprehend the book without communicating the information orally. The books for the project were selected based on the interest of my students. My students love Special Olympics and are interested in the upcoming winter Olympics.
I will use the information obtained from their answers to inform new instruction in my classroom which will allow me to provide greater feedback to my students and their parents.
