Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our special education teacher and I work in a cluster program in a Chicago Public School. We have a maximum of 17 students in our morning and afternoon program that are mainly autistic or have significant developmental delays. Our preschoolers/kindergartner students are mainly non-verbal. We love the simplicity and adaptability of our students. They don't know how to communicate verbally, but you can sense looking at them that there is so much going on inside their beautiful minds. At times they will smile and for a second they may make eye contact. As we go through the day they try to adapt to whatever is going on. They are so special to us because each of them is unique in their own way and they all have different strengths.
My Project
Due to many of my students being autistic and non-verbal, I would like to try and reach them through visual aides.
Autistic children tend to enjoy using puppets and pictures to communicate and what, not a better way to tell a story using felt puppet pictures by using the Lakeshore Storytelling Kits - Set 1 and Tabletop Storytelling Board.
This will hopefully also work and trying to keep them seated during circle time as well as engaged and participating. Using puzzles, like the Magnetic Color Maze, is also a great way to learn turn-taking as well as sorting and colors. Help us gain more materials to be able to reach out to our kids more. They need all that we can offer them because we are their voice.
