My students need large beanbag chairs for our flexible seating classroom. These larger sized beanbags will be helpful for my fifth graders who need bigger sized chairs.
My students are much more than their disability shows they are! They walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. They are strong, creative, fun, happy, and simply put, just wonderful kids.
I teach in a special needs Autism classroom in upstate New York where close to 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My school is also an expanded learning school so my students are in school an hour longer than most schools. They have longer blocks for ELA, Math, and receive enrichment as part of the normal school day.
Despite the hardships my students face, they are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day each in their own way.
My Project
Beanbag chairs help Autistic students who have poor muscle tone; which is common with kids on the autism spectrum. Many children with Autism find Beanbags to be comforting, relaxing, and calming way to have their body surrounded by gentle sensory pressure. This gentle weight and the continuous sensory feedback can be very calming and soothing for a child with Autism. It also helps them to organize their thoughts and emotions. Beanbag chairs are more than just a comfortable option for student's. For children with Autism, they can be an important tool for therapy also.
Larger beanbag chairs will help give my students the calm experiences they need throughout the school day so they can be more focused and ready to learn.
My students have a place to go to in the classroom that is designated for a cool down or quiet area where they can have a sensory break and regroup- this is where the Beanbags are kept. My students are tall for their age. Smaller Beanbags don't fit them as well. My students will be able to work more productively throughout the day with flexible seating and with areas for calming and refocus.
