My Project

In an autism classroom, sensory items are essential tools that help students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) manage their sensory experiences and regulate their emotions. Autism is often associated with sensory processing differences, where individuals may have heightened or lowered sensitivity to sensory stimuli such as touch, sound, sight, taste, and smell. Here's how sensory items can benefit students in an autism classroom:

1.

Sensory Regulation:

Calming: Many sensory items are designed to provide calming input, such as soft textures, gentle vibrations, or soothing sounds. These can help students regulate their emotions when feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

Alerting: On the other hand, some items provide alerting or stimulating input, which can help students who are seeking more sensory input to feel more focused and engaged.

2. Focus and Attention:

Fidget Toys: Items like stress balls, fidget spinners, or textured items can provide a physical outlet for restless energy, allowing students to concentrate better during lessons.

Weighted Items: Weighted blankets, lap pads, or vests can offer deep pressure input, which has a calming effect and can improve attention and focus.

3. Sensory Exploration:

Textures: Providing items with different textures encourages sensory exploration, which can be both fun and educational for students.

Sensory Bins: These contain materials like rice, beans, or sand, allowing students to dig, pour, and explore textures in a controlled environment.

These sensory items will assist our students in the classroom!
