Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to be in school and get distracted very easily? Now imagine what it is like to have autism and be distracted by every noise, light, your clothes, and on top of everything else your teacher still expects you to do work.

We are 9 students with autism (2 fifth graders, 2 fourth graders, 3 first graders, and 2 second graders).

Four out of the nine of also non-verbal and we need all the visuals and technology we can get. We are a mixture of cultures (1 is Korean, 1 is Bengali, and 7 are Hispanic). Our school is in a low economic area and the district is unable to provide all the teaching modalities we need. We are in a K-5 moderate/severe special education class for students with autism. At times some of us will have melt downs; I may start kicking, screaming, hitting, biting, and throwing items. At times I might run because I want to escape. Other times I might hurt myself by biting myself or banging my head on any surface. It is up to my teacher to find what triggers me and help me learn as much as I possibly can learn.

My Project

The spinning disc will help my students receive sensory input. After spinning, some students with autism are able to sit and focus for longer periods of time. The sitting cushions will be used so students can sit and do their work. For some students the hard chairs are not comfortable and they prefer to be bouncing or on some type of cushion. The squishy balls will be used for those students that have a difficult time keeping their hands to themselves.

Your help will really help me as a teacher reach out to my students with moderate to severe autism.

Being a teacher is challenging; however, working with students with autism is more challenging because they are all different. It is up to me to discover what way each of my students learns and communicates. Through donations you will help a child with autism read, write, count, add, subtract, and communicate. The possibilities are endless of what a child with autism will be able to learn.
