Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired.

They enjoy coming to school every day.

Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the Activboard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and "show off."

Our school is very supportive and inclusive. My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion, and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They ARE an important part of our school community.

My Project

Students with developmental disabilities often experience sensory overload that interferes with their ability to learn. My students are directly taught self-regulation techniques to self-calm and self-soothe. These techniques include listening to music or an audio book, deep breathing exercises, and other sensory based activities.

Our classroom has an area specifically designed for students who need a "sensory break." The florescent light filters will take the edge off the harsh classroom lighting.

The mats will provide a defined space in which a student can relax, rest, and regenerate. The headphones are designed to fit their little heads while they listen to an audio book, relaxation music, or favorite app.
