This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
When selecting chapter books to engage students with Autism, it's important to consider their unique interests and learning needs. Two popular series that tend to captivate the interest of many students on the autism spectrum are the DogMan series, by Dav Pilkey, and Minecraft chapter books.
The DogMan books feature a part-dog, part-human superhero and his humorous adventures, told through a comic book-style mix of text and illustrations that appeal to reluctant and struggling readers.
Minecraft chapter books, based on the wildly popular video game, transport students to the blocky world of Minecraft, following the exploits of the game's characters in an accessible narrative format that taps into students' enthusiasm for the game.
Both series feature vivid imagery, fast-paced storylines, and themes of friendship, loyalty, and overcoming challenges that resonate with many students on the spectrum. By offering these high-interest chapter books in the classroom, educators can foster a love of reading, improve literacy skills, and provide valuable opportunities for social connection as students bond over their shared affinity for these beloved characters and stories.
