it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our classroom is filled with the laughter and smiles of our kindergarten-first grade exceptional students. Although our students face many obstacles and challenges, due to their developmental delays, this small group of children won't let anything get in their way of learning and fun.
I have been teaching in the field of special education for almost 17 years.
Recently, I began working in a class with children who are on the autistic spectrum, as well other other developmental delays. Many of my students have sensory processing delays and occupational needs. They will greatly benefit from the use of the requested items to help them resolve any obstacles placed before them. It will be amazing to see how much my students will achieve in an academic environment once I increase the use of modifications, accommodations, various types of teaching strategies, communication skills and techniques each day. In order to do my best, I will need more professional development on autism and American Sign Language. This way, I will be able to help my children improve their communication and socialization skills, as well as meet their sensory processing needs.
My Project
Do-Watch-Listen-Say, Teaching Children with Autisum, Everyone Can Sign, and 25 other professional development and supplemental materials being requested will provide me with the foundation needed for working with these wonderful children. I am requesting various books and DVDs that will provide professional development for me and other teachers who are directly working with my students. ASL books and DVDs will help us learn to communicate with nonverbal students who use this method to communicate. I will then use this knowledge to create and implement strategies learned to enhance my lessons. ASL DVDS will help teach me more signs while also showing me the best ways to teach these signs to my class. Many of my students cannot communicate effectively and become frustrated. Signing offers another way to express themselves.
I've briefly read about how different foods and various diets can affect behavior and improve autistic students' ability to learn. Through research on this topic I hope to gain knowledge on the types of snacks we offer in class and school. Everything affects how these students grow.
Your donations will provide professional development in the area of Autism and American Sign Language.
Teachers can begin basic sign language in our classrooms to offer children another method of communicating. A resource lending library will be set up using the books, DVDs and flashcards once we complete our professional development.
