Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher in Washington Heights, New York City. As I set up my room this year I was perplexed by one corner of my room that is actually curved instead of squared. Although this curved corner makes it an awkward space, I have decided that this year it will be more than just that corner where nothing seems to fit. This corner is going to be the Writer's Workshop. Along with its curviness that will be a relief from the squared corners of school buildings, it will be filled with images, resources, materials and prompts that will inspire this class's brilliant writers. This corner already has a round table for students to spread out while writing or to confer with their colleagues about their work. But this Writing Corner needs something else, an Author's Chair. This chair will be a sacred space where the author sits to share his or her published work with the rest of the class. This chair will be utterly off limits until a request has been submitted by the author and approved by the teacher for its use. The Author's Chair will show the students the importance of their work as writers, as well as give them a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work. While use of the chair will be taken very seriously, it will be used as part of the great celebration of finishing and publishing a written piece. Please help me provide the means for my students to be inspired to express themselves through their writing.
