As a dedicated early childhood teacher in the public sector, each year as I reflect upon my practice I am inspired to improve my students' development through innovative instructional approaches. As my young students enter a structured learning environment for the first time they are generally hesitant and often avoid the writing center. They express a lack of confidence in their ability to create and their parents demonstrate limited knowledge of the various stages of development and the importance to encourage and foster initial attempts. I desire to enhance my learning environment by providing authentic opportunities for my young students to draw and write about their experiences and motivate them to participate in shared and interactive writing throughout the curriculum.
"Authors and Illustrators On The Go!" will nurture my young children's interest in reading and writing for multiple purposes as they make choices and become active learners throughout their instructional day. Providing writing materials in activity centers gives children opportunities to connect reading and writing. The more exposure and engagement with reading and writing for many different purposes in many different contexts provide my students with a broad literacy foundation.
The Picture Story Write & Wipe Boards will provide a dual "kid friendly", portable avenue to encourage and support my young students earliest writing attempts and experiments with various writing tools. A child's ability to symbolize is essential for early literacy development. Children's pictures and scribbles demonstrate their emerging knowledge of print concepts and a developing knowledge of the features of different types of text. A drawing shows the emergence of small-motor control. Children gradually learn to master the functions and purposes of writing as they practice the forms and features of print. Efforts at making letters or writing a name indicate an awareness of the meaning of printed text. The Write & Wipe Crayons and Markers will encourage daily creativity and reinforce diversity. The Write & Wipe Lapboard Erasers with easy grip wooden handles will foster confidence and develop independence.
Early attempts at writing help children develop reading skills. "Authors and Illustrators On The Go!" will enable my students to use and progress from pretend writing to identifiable word-like group of letters and develop an understanding that writing is a way of communicating for a variety of purposes addressing and achieving Illinois Early Learning Standards. You can help develop future authors and illustrators by fostering early literacy development.
