I have been in the Philadelphia School District for twenty years and I have been in my current school for seventeen years. I always strive to find new strategies to keep my students engaged and eager to learn. Each year, I need to develop new centers, incorporate new teaching techniques and styles in order to keep up with the changing community.
I believe all children can and want to learn and it is my job to help them achieve their goals and to become productive citizens.
Hopefully with the help of Donorschoose this year will be just as successful as my past years!
A lot of children entering kindergarten have not been to preschool or daycare, and some have limited support from home because they live in shelters, single parent homes, or the parents have limited reading skills themselves. These children can"t identify letters or numbers and may only be able to count up to five, and are only able to identify one to two shapes.
Centers are used in my classroom throughout the day.
By having My First Write Journals my students will be able to create and write their own stories which will help them become life long writers. They will also begin to see themselves as true authors and illustrators.
The Letter Sounds Puzzles and the Learning Letters Activity Center will be placed in my writing station along with letter tiles, letter sound bingo, letter sound dominoes and alphabet letter books. These centers will give my students who still need to identify letters a more hands on approach to enhance these skills. During small group instruction I will be able to work one on one with with these students using these centers by having the students identify letters, use the letter tiles to spell words and identify the letters in their names. The letter sound puzzles will help the students to begin to associate letter sounds with pictures. My students will also be able to work independently or with a partner using these centers. Having these centers will help enhance my students reading and writing skills.
