Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade to a class of brilliant girls in New York City. Many of my students are English language learners and children with special needs. Most qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

All of my students are creative, thoughtful, and eager learners, and much of their knowledge this year has been expressed through their literacy and play.

It has been so exciting to see them fully engaged each day as they learn through collaboration and play with their peers.

I teach 28 bright and beautiful first-graders in a high-needs area of New York. My students and I have been working intensively to get to grade-level proficiency in reading. We set realistic reading goals and are working to make at least one year's growth. They have a goal-setting mindset.

My Project

Research suggests that children tend to prefer and are more likely to engage with literature that reflects their personal experiences.

When children of color encounter characters that look like them and whose stories mirror their own experiences and culture, they are more likely to see how reading can play a role in their lives and to develop a love of reading.

Author /illustrator, Monique Duncan, aims to promote cultural awareness by cultivating a child’s understanding of themselves, their communities and the world around them. Her vibrantly illustrated books reflect images and experiences with which children of diverse cultures can identify. I would like my students to experience a visit from the author. She will do an interactive read-aloud of her book When Mama Braids My Hair. She will also have a workshop for parents who would like to learn about multicultural books in the classroom.
