My Students

Imagine having a published author/illustrator visit your class when you were a child. Wouldn't that have inspired you to pick up a pencil right then and there? My kids will love meeting Abby Hanlon!

I teach second grade in New York.

We are a diverse community with enthusiastic children and wonderful families. Many of the children speak another language at home, and some are recent immigrants. The students are great about embracing diversity and welcoming everyone.

My Project

I am requesting a visit by author Abby Hanlon. She wrote a book called "Ralph Tells a Story." This book is about a boy who has trouble coming up with ideas at writing time in school. He sees his friends write stories that are pages and pages long, but Ralph only writes his name on his paper. My students loved this book when I read it to them. It was so engaging and funny! This happens all the time to real-life second graders! I would love for my kids to meet the author of this humorous and inspiring book. I just know it would kick-start their minds and get them to fall in love with writing. Also, meeting an author would be a fabulous experience for them.

Writing can be difficult for young children.

This difficulty is compounded for children for whom English is a second language. It can be hard for them to think of ideas for stories. My goal is to make writing fun, not frustrating. Abby Hanlon wrote a story that children can identify with on so many levels. I know their own creativity would be jump started. They would also remember this author visit for years to come.
