Author Study: Mo Willems

My Students

Can you name your favorite author from when you were in elementary school? My favorite author was Dr. Seuss. Well, today, Mo Willems is the author every first grader loves. And, when kids love an author, they want to read. As a teacher, this is a dream come true.

I teach for a large, urban, public school district.

My first grade class includes English Language Learners and Special Education students. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have reading materials at home. Some also do not have parents that can read to them because of a language barrier. For these reasons, it is important for me to have quality reading materials in the classroom for my students to read everyday.

My Project

I'm asking for a collection of Mo Willems books to do an author study. Mo Williams uses basic sight words, character dialogue, and humor in his books. They are very appealing to first graders. Through an author study, students will read a variety of Mo Willems books. They will compare and contrast the stories and characters in the books. We will create a list that describes the author's style and purpose. Students will have the opportunity to write their own version of a Mo Willems book to share with the class.

This new book collection, written by Mo Willems will encourage my students to engage in repeated readings.

Students will improve fluency. Groups or partners will practice retelling the stories in their own words to improve comprehension. My first graders will continue to experience reading for pleasure while learning at the same time. Please help my first graders learn more about Mo Willems and improve their reading skills, too!
