I am a kindergarten teacher in a high poverty school on the south side of Chicago. My students are vibrant and excited about reading. However, many of my students are only now being richly exposed to books for the first time. They are beginning to understand that books are written and illustrated by real people. There are many ways to familiarize children with the authors and illustrators of books. One way to expose students to the creators of literature is through author studies. Reading several titles by the same author is an excellent way to discover the many ways people write. It also helps them to identify that books are written by people just like them. Another way to expose children to the author is by studying one subject by many authors. Utilizing this technique, students see that people can approach a topic in many different ways. I plan to create a comfortable child friendly (Kindergarten size) reading area where children can read many books from one author or subject. I will have a special bookcase with books from one author or theme and a child size couch to read at. I have already begun to collect a few authors but need more books to make it accessible to as many students as possible. After studying an author or theme, students can utilize our class writing center to create books in the same illustration style or written format as the author we are studying. The more children understand that real people write books and that everyone has a story to tell, the more comfortable they will be sharing their own ideas and stories. Thank you for considering my proposal.
