Author Study Corner: Using Mentor Text to Inspire Writers
My students need a mobile storage with carts and book bins, not only to easily find and organize books by published authors, but also a space to keep their own published stories and poems.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Alcaraz's classroom raised $514

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember having to write a story and you didn't know how to begin? My students have a demanding writing curriculum supported by studying authors and text with great craft. Locating these books in our classroom library are half the battle, so book bins would eliminate some of the frustration.
My first graders are mostly English Language Learners who love to read stories and have stories read to them, which is how many of them learn academic vocabulary needed to achieve in society.
They attend a school with limited resources but yet are very enthusiastic when it comes to participating in their own learning. Their favorite part of the day is Writer's Workshop when they get to create their own stories and include craft mimicked from published authors.
My Project
I envision my classroom to have a large "Writing Center" where my students can sit and be inspired by great writing. With a book bin organizer my students will be able to quickly locate their favorite authors and be inspired to use craft learned from these said authors. My students are learning to include imagery, voice, and punctuation in order to create a feeling and mood for the reader. They can only learn these techniques by reading them and examining them from their favorite authors, such as Mo Willems and David Shannon. Once my students use some of these techniques in their writing, they are then able to publish their stories. Once published, my students can then use and label their own bin where they can keep their published stories to continue to inspire others. The file organizer will help keep different types of publishing paper organized as well as their rough drafts, for easy retrieval in order to minimize time wasted and maximize writing and reading time.
Donating to this project is important because while budget cuts continue to impact our classrooms, we must still overcome these hard times and give to our future as much as we can.
Since writing is the synthesis of all learning, a Writing Center filled and organized with examples of great writing serves as a tremendous support for student learning. With this Writing Center, my students will always have a place to read, learn, and be inspired, no matter what is going on in the world around them.
