This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students I work with are primarily from lower income, single parent families. They often have to deal with some heavy life experiences. As such, the social and emotional needs of my students is high. My students may be 4-5 years old, but the language they use and choice of hobbies are often closer to that of a teenager. These children are trained well in the ways of their neighborhood. A prevailing thought in this community is that school is an unpleasant thing, and teachers are thought of to be controlling and mean. These issues manifest themselves in numerous ways with my students.
My main goals working with this population is to help enable students to deal with the social and emotional aspects of their world, and to help each child foster a love of learning.
That love will come from being exposed to experiences and materials that are interesting to the child.
My Project
My students need fun and exciting books by Mo Willems and the Pete the Cat series that they can use and read on a daily basis. The purpose of these books are two fold. First and foremost, the books will be used to create a literacy rich environment for students. The books will be added to our classroom library where students will have access to them throughout the day. The second purpose of the books is to allow us to do an author study where we dive deeper into an author's work, exploring the common themes, settings, moral dilemmas, etc.
By giving students access to age appropriate books, we help develop early literacy skills while creating learners who value and have an interest in books.
It is my hope as a teacher that by promoting reading through fun and interesting books, students will develop a love of reading and storytelling. The love of books is beneficial throughout one's entire life, and there is no better time to foster that love then when they are young.
