This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Who is the author? Exposing my students to the author is important but knowing the name is not enough. My students need to be familiar with their style and other stories that they have written in order to do comparisons and use as mentors for their own writing.
My First graders are an energetic group of 24 English Language Learners who are getting more excited about the books that I am reading to them.
One of the main reasons that my students are enjoying books is due to the lack of books in their homes. Many of the families in our community are of low sociol-economic status and don't have access to books at home to read to their children. Our school library and classroom libraries also have limited amount of books written by the authors we study in class.
My Project
I not only want to read books to my students, but I want them to be able to know the author, the author's style of writing, and other works by them. This is why I do Author Studies with my first graders. Through Author Studies my students begin to discuss the author's style in whole group lessons and later in small groups and partners. As they become familiar with the author they want to reread these books and look for them in the library. In addition to discussing this book during lessons, they respond and reflect to the books by answering questions in their reading response journals. This will eventually prepare my students to do literature circles. My students are not just listening to stories but thinking about what they are hearing as well.
By donating to this project, my students will be able to do an Author Study on Kevin Henkes and Dr. Seuss.
Having access to these stories will help my students be able to see the author's style and the other books written by the author. I want my students to be able to discuss the author and think while they read. I want them to be able to grow as readers and be able to apply this as they move on to other grades. Not only will they be exposed to great authors, but know what makes them great.
