Help me give my students a Spanish book collection to get excited about a new school year of reading. They will love the new addition of authentic books.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a group of very active 5th graders. They love to dance, play video games, listen to music, and engage in math and reading games online. I love that my students have grown to respect each other and feel compassion as a class. I encourage my students to be life-long learners and avid readers. Our current problem is that our classroom library was donated by retired teachers and leftovers from our school library. As a class, we have come together to talk about our interests and connect that to ourselves as readers.
My classroom is a dual language immersion class with a 50/50 model in English and Spanish.
My classroom will have to include both an English and a Spanish library. My students will be reading in both languages equally, but we will need more books in Spanish since it’s the hardest to get our hands-on.
My Project
The new book addition will help our classroom library grow little by little. I currently have a full English classroom library, but my Spanish side is lacking. I want to provide my students with the opportunity to read authentic books from Spanish speaking countries, rather than have translations of books they have already read in English. I know my students will be more excited to see authentic books because they will be an entirely new concept to read from Spanish speaking authors, and it will open their eyes to other cultures around the world. It is difficult to get our hands on authentic books and this is an amazing opportunity for my students to have access to variety in the classroom.
