Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a high-risk Title I school in an urban setting. We have 40% of our students living in temporary housing. Our school community is small but there is a real need to address the emotional wellbeing of our staff and community.
As we prepare for the fall we know from March to June all the issues that came along with remote teaching.
We are in need of book club sets that students can read. Book clubs allow authentic reading and sharing of themes and social issues. It also allows students to discuss real and relevant issues today and how they relate to history when reading in non-fiction book clubs that go along with our social studies themes.
My Project
This year we are blended teaching and we will have more time for small group instruction. This will allow us to differentiate and focus more closely on each scholar's needs and interests.
Having the books to teach in book clubs is so important because it enables students to read a variety of books, relate to characters and topics that are relevant to them.
Having more books means more choice. It means engagement that fosters motivation to read and talk about what they are learning about the word and themselves through stories. I am asking for a white board as well so that I can work in a small groups and have a place to display the learning targets, vocabulary, and focus questions. Our room doesn't have any surface to write on or model through drawing. This would help not only with book club small group instruction but with math and other subjects throughout the day.
