This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun." As an art teacher, I am in the business of helping young artists develop both creativity and intelligence!
My student artists, many first and second-generation Americans are growing up in a large urban school district, whose budget cuts resulted in the suspension of our school's art program for many years.
Our tremendous school community dreamed of bringing our students an art program, and have been thrilled to watch our students' creativity blossom. Now in its 8th year, our art program has moved into a new classroom, transitioned to a choice-based-studio, and continues to see fantastic results. From September to June the walls of our school are covered with beautiful pieces that make students proud. Each year culminates with a school-wide art gallery and sees students represented in district-wide art shows!
My Project
As an educator who values creativity, innovation, and a student's voice, I want students to be the directors of their own artistic experience. That is why, at GES, we learn in a choice-based studio. Every day, student-artists set goals, design projects, and identify and seek experience with necessary skill sets to achieve their best final results.
When every artist is creating authentic, original, and unique pieces of art, creating equally authentic and appropriate assessments can be a challenge.
As the lone art teacher, I need to seek out ways to collaborate and create content with professional peers.
Designing and implementing a choice-based studio has been a dream come true! It also means our studio sounds, looks and feels a lot different than a traditional classroom! Lesson structures, content delivery, and assessment all present unique challenges. As educators, we encourage students to recognize areas in which they require more support, and seek out the best resources to help them improve. I know that to create meaningful assessments that help our artist grow, I am in need of more learning and support from professional peers and experts.
I hope to complete the Art of Education's 8-week course on Assessment in Art Education. Throughout this course, I will examine current research in assessment in arts education and explore strategies and systems used by some of the top schools and programs in the nation to assess the arts. Based on the research and models from class, I will leave this course with a comprehensive toolkit that has many different types of authentic assessments ready for direct application in your classroom.
